چکیده

This paper addresses the problem of deriving measures that express the degree of the reliability of motion vectors estimated by a Block Matching motion estimation method. We express the block matching motion estimation scheme in the probabilistic framework and derive the confidence measures in terms of the a-posteriori probabilities of the estimated vectors. The type of the underlying conditional probability distribution of the motion compensated intensity differences (e.g. Laplacian) is derived from the objective criterion of the Block Matching estimator. All parameters are estimated from data that are derived as by-product of the motion estimation scheme. The derivation is incorporated in a multiscale scheme. Experimental results are presented for image sequences with known ground-truth motion.

Adaptive search area for fast motion estimation

In this paper a new method for determining the search area for motion estimation algorithm based on block matching is suggested. In the proposed method the search area is adaptively found for each block of a frame. This search area is similar to that of the full search (FS) algorithm but smaller for most blocks of a frame. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is analogous to FS in terms of reg...

New adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation

Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...

Simplified Block Matching Criteria for Motion Estimation ∗

In this paper, we propose fast block matching criteria to reduce the implementation complexity of motion estimation in VLSI video coders. Based on generalized quantization of pixel difference measures, the block matching criteria combined with bitmap exclusive-OR (XOR) concept can be realized by short length adders and a multi-input binary counter. The proposed approach can be treated as a gene...

Reliable search strategy for block motion estimation by measuring the error surface

The conventional search algorithms for block matching motion estimation reduce the set of possible displacements for locating the motion vector. Nearly all of these algorithms rely on the assumption: the distortion function increases monotonically as the search location moves away from the global minimum. Obviously, this assumption essentially requires that the error surface be unimodal over th...

Comparative Study of Motion Estimation Techniques in Video

Block matching motion estimation is the essence of video coding systems. Therefore, development of an efficient method for fast motion estimation is the basic requirement of the video encoder design. Block based motion estimation algorithms are used to reduce the memory requirements of any video file and also decrease computational complexity. We have been presented here some block matching alg...
